Reviews, Discussions, Personal Thoughts and even some talk about the book...
Good times were had by all, last night. Thanks to Amanda and Gordon for opening their beautiful home and a special thanks to Gordon for serving up the delicious food. He started us off with humus and crispy pita bread. I brought extra creamy Brie and Sara brought Table water crackers. Then Gordon whipped up some really tasty Risotto with a touch of cheese and a wild greens salad with grapes and blue-cheese. This was all brought together with a couple of glasses of wine (for those of us not expecting) and some nice….juice (God…I could never give up my wine) for those with “Baby on Board”. It was all rounded off with Amy’s cookies and Sheri’s cupcakes. (is it coincidence that the mama’s-to-be brought the desserts?)
There was lots of talk of races past and races to be, the success of this year’s Blues on the Green series, cooking, house selling and hunting, the labors of love with training and caring for our dogs and even, at one point, The Time Traveller’s Wife.
From what I gathered most everyone liked the book except for, maybe, Sara. We discussed a few of the questions from the back of the book, such as What was the significance of Henry being a librarian. We also touched on the trend of Claire always seeming to be waiting for Henry and what we thought happened in the years between their last time together and when he finally comes to her at the end of her life. We all pretty much concluded that the it is a sad book but I was touched at the love Henry and Claire share from almost their first meeting, when she is six, till the end. In case you have not read the book or finished it, I will stop there…. I recommend that you pick this one up. It will run you through the gambit of your emotions.
We also had Chef Gordon pull from the imaginary hat (I actually think it was a small shopping bag) the next four books that we will read. The contributors of the book ideas chosen will hostess the gathering that corresponds to the reading of their book. This could mean having everyone over to their house, asking everyone to bring a picnic to the park, picking a restaurant to meet at or whatever that person dreams up.
For our next book readings we have-
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro which will be hosted by Amy (which I just realized I have read)
History of Love by Nicole Krauss which will be hosted by Ellen
7th Heaven by Alice Hoffman which will be hosted by Sara
Kafka on the Shore (author?) which will be hosted by Amanda
The next meeting should (but you never know) take place around the end of Aug.
Please feel free to use this blog to post book suggestions or, if you have a book you are finished reading and would like to share, feel free to post here.

I orderd "Shadow of the Wind" yesterday along with our four upcoming books. So I'm excited to read it!
Warning to everyone: Marla realized that she's read our first book, and she says it's really depressing and freaky in a Time Traveller's Wife way! So I'm sorry if it causes any breakdowns, especially to those of us who have freaky pregnancy hormones right now. But I'm still going to read it...It has to be easier than The Magus!
I just finished "Shadow of the Wind" last night and absolutely loved it, Sara! Great recommendation! Everyone should definitely read this when you get a chance.
