March Book Report Due Date (and Dinner Date)
Hello Friends,
So, what was on your bedside table, this month? That will be our topic of discussion for our next Ladies of Literature Luncheon. No, not really a "luncheon" but I could not pass up the opportunity for such great alliteration.
We will be giving mini reviews of whatever book we chose to read, just started or just thought about reading, this month. Actually, if you read a great magazine article, bring that to the table. It doesn't matter....just come prepared to discuss something you read.
Here are some thoughts to consider when you are trying to decide what in heaven's name you are going to tell us. (totally plagiarising, this with a few very minor changes)
- What made you want to read it? Did it live up to your expectations? Why or why not?
- How is the book structured? Does the author use any narrative devices like flashbacks or multiple voices in telling the story? How did this affect your reading of the story and your appreciation of the book? Do you think the author did a good job with it?
-Talk about the author's use of language/writing style. Read your favorite passage out loud. How does this particular passage relate to the story as a whole? Does it reveal anything specific about any of the characters or illuminate certain aspects of the story?
-Discuss the mystery aspect of the plotline. How effective is the author's use of plot twists and red herrings? Were you able to predict certain things before they happened, or did the author keep you guessing until the end of the story? Did you find that the novel held your interest throughout the story, or were there times when it failed to totally engross you?
-How important is the setting to the story? If applicable, discuss the time period in which the book is set. Does the author provide enough background information for you to understand the events in the story? -Is the author equally invested in both character and plot? Or did the author put more effort into developing the story than in creating compelling and believable characters? Were the motivations of the characters believable, or did their actions feel like a means to further the plot?
Now...our first discussion...when and where. I am going to throw a date and a place out on the table. Please add your thoughts and comments. Also, please bring a friend to our meeting. They don't have to discuss their latest book...they can just enjoy the great company and fine food and hopefully, they will want to return, the next month, for more of the same.

March 28th, 6:30pm at East Side Cafe.

Sara great job on the recap of the evening. I would also like to add that was my first time to East Side Cafe and I thought the food was yummy! Marla thanks for the location suggestion.
So many books, not enough time to read them all. Maybe books on tape is the way to go. Gosh one could listen to a whole book on a long bike ride, not that I recommend wear head phones while biking on the street but a trainer would be a different story.

I have a read a few of the books discussed...
The Life of Pi - is that real?
The Secret Lives of Bees- makes me wanna be a beekeeper. It all seems so serene (until the first time I get stung by a bee)
The Kite Runner - really good..I was suprised as I normally don't like books that aren't touchy feel good books.
The Jane Austin Bookclub book sounds right up my alley. And Ellen has promised to let me borrow her Devil in the White City audiobook. When you drive over 50 miles a day..audio books are the way to go!
I will post my Aloft review, in a bit.
Sheri, East Side is my favorite food joint, in town. I was super sad to miss it.
