What I have gained from book club

So, I'm running this morning with a friend and she asks me, "you're in a book club aren't you"? What books have you read that you would suggest? I went through my list of those that I could remember (remembered that I liked, I mean). I suggested The Secret Life of Bees (did we read that?) which her group had already read. How about The Proverbial Summer? She didn't like Barbara's other books. What about Lolita, which we just finished? She had already read it. I didn't really like Reading Lolita in Tehran so didn't suggest that one. I really liked Kafka on the Shore. I suggested it, next. She hadn't heard of it and so said she would look into it.
I asked her what books she had read, because of book club, that she would or would not suggest. She said, "Don't read The Road". Never heard of it but probably won't read it now. She said she never would have read but she is now glad she did, "Eat...Pray...Love" which is on our list and I read on my trip to the UK. The point of this blog is, this is what I love about book club...learning about new books, new authors, who you like, don't like and an added bonus is it gives us something to talk about on our runs!
The BEST thing about book club is getting together and sharing. We are sharing our time, which for each of us is precious, and filling that time with good laughs, good food and good company. That was exactly what we had this past Monday. Charlotte, Sara, Sheri and myself met at Cheesecake factory. We did more catching up than anything else. Sara has moved to Cambridge so it is always nice to get to spend time with her. Sheri has bought a house and closes on Friday. Good luck! And, Charlotte has bought a house, sold a house and is selling a house. Crazy!
Out of the four of us, three of us enjoyed the book and one of us hadn't yet finished. I probably won't pick up anymore of Vladimir Nobokov's books but, like many of the marathons I have run,I don't plan to run again, but am happy I ran them at least the once and know that I gained something from the experience (in this case reading).
Our next book choice was my suggestion- Many Moons by Thomas Mallon.

Happy Reading!
