The History of Love
Highlights of the History of Love Book Discussion Dinner
I'm not sure what the consensus was on this book. Sara and Sheri have not finished it, yet, but I think Ellen and Amanda said they liked it. So, these are my opinions and my remarks not to mistaken for others.
Personally, I liked the book but would like to re-write the ending. I think I would make his friend, Boris, real and Bird a figment of Alma's imagination or maybe her mother's imagination. On that topic, what ever became of Alma's mom and what about the Russian friend/love interest, Mischa? I have no interest in writing my own endings to someone else's story. There are cut off points and there are things left unsaid. I feel that there was loads of things left unsaid and unfinished. I wonder what happened to her dream of hiking across The North Pole. I wonder if Bird realized that he was not the next prophet when the rains stopped. Did her mom ever get a date? Did she ever realize that Issac and the nude man she drew were one and the same?
I'm not going to speculate.
Back to the bookshelf.....it was a wonderful evening. We got to sample some of Ellen's excellent cooking. I don't how she found the time to put together such a wonderful spread. We topped the meal off with some of Nedra's spectacular pumpkin cake. Before dinner, though, we took some time to present our two Mothers-in-waiting with children's books that we either chose because we loved them, when we were small, or because we had heard good things about them.
It was a nice night and I'm really glad that I got a chance to visit with everyone. I'm looking forward to the next gathering.
